Why Should You Invest In Yourself?

Often enough, times, we don’t consider investing in ourselves. However, we don’t waste time investing in a car, our house, even a job.  We also invest our money to yield a profit.

How Do You Invest in Yourself? Well, there are many ways to invest in yourself to make a better version. You can start by your way of thinking when you have some downtime, instead of turning on the television. You could watch a video or read a book to learn something new. Take a course online to further your education.

During this time, when a lot of us are stuck at home do to the Coronavirus. Now, the perfect time to act while you are sitting at home. Take this time to invest in yourself. Think of all the things you can do during this time to invest in yourself. It could be your weight, taking better care of your skin and hair, finding ways to improve your health, figuring out how to better your finances or career. Maybe you want to further your education. You may not want all these things. The first thing is to figure out what is most important to you that you want to improve. The one thing you will be willing to take the time to invest in and remain loyal to the project until you’ve finished.

There are other ways to invest in yourself, personally as well. Like you might want to become more spiritual. You might want to learn how to relax more by meditating. You might want to feed your soul with inspirational quotes. You might want to invest in reading more books. Who doesn’t love a good book to lose oneself? You may not see the results, but you will feel them, which can change your mood, attitude, and even the way you think about things in life, making you a better person.

Do you want to make a career change? Now, the time to look into the things you enjoy doing. Learn what you can to determine what you need to do to accomplish this goal. You might be surprised to learn you can pull off doing the change. If you want to start your own online business, utilize the time you have now to get it started. Yes, I know funds are tight. Unfortunately, it takes money to make money. It could be an investment that turns out to be in your favor. Make sure you don’t overdo your investment, breaking your bank at this time.

Never stop learning. Knowledge is power. Sometimes it can mean more money in your pocket. Remember, you are your greatest asset. If you don’t invest in yourself, then everything else you have invested in could all be for nothing. So, take care of yourself. Yes, this means to pamper yourself from time to time. You deserve it. It will help you live longer to enjoy the finer things in life that you have worked so hard to achieve.

You know, as well as I do. When we get back to the normalcy of life, the hustle and bustle will begin—leaving little time to invest within ourselves. Life is demanding. With work, school, kids, hubby, and social life, it is a whirled wind. Even in these times, you have to remind yourself to schedule some pamper me time. So, mark your calendars, look forward to those days.

I would love to hear how you have been investing in yourself?

Why Should You Have a Website?

This post contains affiliate links, which means if you click on the link, purchase anything, I will get credit, should there be a sale.

If you have a business, you need a website. Why? Because you need to have a place to send people to check out what you are all about, whether it be a book you’ve written, a product you are selling, or a service you are providing.

It is easier to drive your clients/customers to one place then to several different places. You want to make it easy for people to see what your company is and what it has to offer.

So, what should you have on your website, you ask?

Ultimately that is up to you. However, I suggest to have some of the following:

  • Your welcome page – It can be to welcome your customers, or you can have the main product you want to sell on this page.
  • Product page – You will want to have all your products on this page so your customers/fans can see everything you are offering.
  • Blog/Vblog page – This is great for you to get content out to your readers, so they know what is available and where to go to get it via your website. It also sends them to your page, allowing them to see older posts you’ve posted.
  • About page – Give your customers/fans a place to go to learn about you as a person. You want to ease their weariness of why they should buy from you.
  • Contact page – Great place for your customers/fans to be able to contact you so you can answer questions. Or they may want to request something from you. It also a suitable way for businesses to be able to ask you to participate in an event.
  • Newsletter page – You want your customers/fans to have easy access to find out about the new products and services you will be providing. Which is super important, it’s the best way to communicate with your audience.
  • Events page – Give your customers/fans a place to see what events you have planned and where. Book tours, vacations, conventions, or retreats for writing so they know you’ll be unavailable. Plus, you could use this page for the schedule of a course you’ve put together to help others by sharing the knowledge you know.

I recommend the site I use, which is WordPress. It’s user-friendly. Having a great selection of platform themes to choose from to set up your site. Plus, you can change your theme at any time. They even have a free library for you to select a photo in-case you don’t have one, or you need to use it as a filler. It’s easy to upload—an excellent price for a website, especially for someone who is just starting their career. A great place to set up a blog/vblog they link directly to Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, and Linkedin to drive traffic to your webpage. You also get your web address for free the first year, which helps when getting started. If your business requires you to have a store, then you’ll want to upgrade to a business plan.

Another fantastic thing is the fact they have Jetpack, which is a built-in stat tracker. You can even set up Google Analytics, allowing you to see what site your traffic was directed, like social media or a search engine. It also lets you know the geographic destination of your traffic. I love to see what part of the world someone is in that is looking at my site. It can be amazing to see someone from Bruma, China, or even Singapore has visited your webpage.

You can keep track of your stats with the WordPress app on your phone. You can even do posts on your phone app while you are sitting around waiting at the doctor’s office, shopping with family, or waiting to be seated at a restaurant. Or at the coffee shop having a Latte. You can not worry about downtime, which is the most important thing since time is money. No one wants to waste time. We all love to utilize our time effectively, especially being the boss.

Note: Always mark your calendar to remind you when your website is up for renew. Time can fly by fast before you know it a year has passed. It’s also amazing to look at the yearly stats to see how much your traffic as grown.

The Book I Read This Week? The Runaway Princess by Christina Dodd

The feature imagine is the courtesy of Avon Books, an imprint of Harper Collins Publishing. I just took the picture of the book.

The Runaway Princess is wonderous for a book to read. I have to say I enjoyed it so much I read the whole book in one day. I didn’t want to put it down. My hubby had to finish dinner because I was so caught up in this book.

You might be wondering why I am telling you about a romance novel?

Well, that is because every once in awhile, it is good to read outside of one’s genre. It gives you a different point of view that broadens your imagination. Not to mention, it keeps things on the spicy side of life.

It starts with a mystery as to who this woman is as she walks into a restaurant. Everyone looks to her as if she was of the nobility. She holds the air about her as she walks through the dining area. She enjoys the adventure she is on. Until she’s told, she has an admirer, this news rocks her world, running scared to hid behind a close door. Only to be tricked into opening the door by someone she trusts.

There is a man, seeing the person she trusted had betrayed her. He pushes his way inside her room. Thinking all the while, this man is the danger, when a bomb comes flying into her room. The dangerous man is now protecting her. With everything, she owned in her life gone due to the bomb that exploded in her room. Her life being in danger, she has no other choice but to trust this man.

As they run for their lives, with his two brothers, it becomes apparent that one, if not both are a traitor serving the man that is trying to kill them who is the last brother. All the while, the woman is trying her best to get free. Though she as no idea where to go or how she will support herself.

Finally, she gets free only to fall into the hands of the last brother. Being held hostage by several men, she worries what fate has in store for her. The brother comes to rescue her to be captured themselves. Relying on her wits to keep her alive, burnt, and scorched, she able to save them all from the clutches of danger.

Going their separate ways, she takes another opportunity to escape the man’s grasp. Only to have her own heart do her in missing him so much she goes to the city where she knows he will be.

Getting into the city, she learns more about herself from the folks within. Seeing the brothers knowing one or both or a traitor, she has to dodge then take flight. One fast on her heels stuck in an alley with him not far behind, she beats on the doors hoping someone hears.

Her prays to get answered. She’s able to go into a garden, safe from the brother. To learn more about what seems to be her destiny, or is it a twist of faith, someone put into play. Either way, it works on her; she gives in knowing she is in love with the man. Choosing to stand by him no matter what the cost is. She only prays everything works out, and they don’t meet their death.

I have only highlighted some of the good parts there are many more, don’t miss out reading this book. I have to say it is one of the best books where the female is smart. Smarter than the men giver her credit for, which she proves many times leaving them in awe.

Once you’ve arrived, you will walk over the bridge leading to the front door. Upon entering into Taste of Nations restaurant, the atmosphere is peacefully quiet. While you wait to be seated, you can see many exquisite pieces of Chinese artwork. Along with a large television, in case you would like to watch some while you eat.

Usually, Jeffery will be the one to greet you. His friendly personality will put you at ease as he sits you at one of the many tables in the dining area. He takes the time to listen to you as you talk, which can be great, especially during or after a hard day’s work.

Jeffery will go out of his way to make sure you have an enjoyable meal. Don’t be fooled. This restaurant has many local as well as imported beer. Like wine, do not worry. They’ve got you covered.

With many genuine dishes on the menu, you’ll have a variety of choices to choose from for your meal. The owners of this establishment are also the cooks. They take pride in the food they prepare for their guests.

Growing up cooking Jeffery has become quite the Chef, now he teaches others how to prepare many dishes in a cooking class—making many exotic dishes like Jellyfish. Yes, Jellyfish is not on the menu; however, if you ask, he will prepare for you. If there is a special dish you would like prepared, discuss with him, he may need some advance time to ensure he has all the ingredients.

Want to eat, but not want to dine in. You can call to place your order, then stop by to pick up while you are out and about. Unfortunately, this restaurant does not deliver.

Sausage Casserole

Ever open the refrigerator to make dinner. Only to realize as you are looking on every shelf that you forgot to take something out of dinner. Don’t fret you’re not alone. It was this exact situation that I came up with the idea for this meal. It is super simple to make. It has become a favorite dish of ours.

Ingredients

1 Roll Breakfast Sausage

6 Potatoes Sliced

1 Cup Cheese

½ Onion Diced

2 Tbl Butter

Dash Salt

Dash Pepper

Dash Basil

Dash Tony’s Original

Directions

Wash the potatoes. Don’t worry about peeling them, all the nutrients are in the skin, so I always leave them on. Cut in quarters then slice all six potatoes. Next, dice up the onion.

On medium heat, add butter in the skillet to saute onion. Then add the sliced potatoes along with the breakfast sausage. Stir continuously breaking up the meat and allowing to cook thoroughly.

Once the meat is fully cooked, remove from the heat and drain the grease. Return the skillet to low heat. Add herbs to spice to taste before spreading the cheese all over the top of the sausage and potatoes. Allow the cheese to melt before removing the skillet from the heat.

Serve in bowls or plates, makes four servings. Total preparation 15 minutes and cooking time roughly 30 minutes for a total of 45 minutes to prepare.

You can garnish with fresh herbs to make it look more exquisite.

Coronavirus Update

Well, Texas is opening back up, the number is once again climbing with the coronavirus patients, making a new one-day high for the seventh time in eight days. With over a thousand new cases, local officials are urging residents to be more mindful of social distancing, plus wearing their protective gear such as masks.

The Officials fear the actual number of cases is higher, due to many people haven’t been tested. As of now, there is a 3,129 new case, 97,200 total confirmed, and 2,084 deaths in Texas and a 2,182,285 total confirmed, 118,279 total deaths in the United States, per John Hopkins, with these number, please stay safe out there.

Writing – A Chance to Say Thanks

I would like to thank Ted Huntington from the Authors Networking Group for mentioning me in Share Tuesday, plus all the beautiful things he stated about my writing. Please check him out on Facebook Ted Huntington, he is the author of Doug Maxwell.

sticky notes on board

A way to keep you on track as to your writing assignments. Yes, a post-it note board, always you to see what needs to be done. IF you need to reorder, you can move the post-it notes around, putting them in the priority order you need to accomplish the task at hand. You can even color-code them by the project. Once you have finished with the task, you can tape them to a piece of paper, placing them within a notebook or in a box. It’s good to have for reference when writing either your blog or a book. It’s also great to have as a scrapbook to reflex on at the end of the year. You can share with others all your accomplishments.

I mean, I don’t know about you, but when your working on a blog, social media, Videos (YouTube), writing books, as well as other projects, it’s not hard to get overwhelmed. A good planner is essential in keeping things organized as well. I recommend a planner with a monthly, weekly, and daily section. A monthly section to log in everything you need to accomplish for the month. The weekly one to break down the project by the week. Daily I would do the morning of, you never know what might happen to screw up your schedule. Wake up with a sick kid, an unexpected friend pop in for a visit, or you might not feel good yourself. This way, you won’t have to whiteout the whole day. You can just write what is happening, so you know what to schedule for the next day. When planning your day, use block times with extra time in between projects for the unexpected thing that is bound to happen. It’s Murphy’s Law if you schedule your calendar full everything will go wrong, If you leave extra time then things go smoothly.

Blog Recommendations – Food Lovers

I chosen food for this week, in honor of Father’s Day. They say a way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. I don’t know if that’s true or not, but according to my husband, he said it’s false. Anyway, we all love food, who can resist a tasty dish, bona petite.

In Dianes Kitchen She has some lovely dishes, healthy too. Who knew healthy food could look so delicious. One day I will get around to making a lot of these receipts, but for now, I am choosing the ones I have the ingredients on hand to prepare dinner.

Vintagekitchen.org, has some amazing healthy foods as well as some delicious sweets. I must say, I have never heard of Lilac Syrup until I found this website. It is one dish I will be making myself, to explore its taste. I love trying new receipts, I don’t want to eat the same thing all the time.

Almost Italian, with these scrumptious receipts, I hope you’re hungry because if your not, you will be by the time you get done looking at all the receipts on this site.

All this food is making me hungry. I will be finding something to make from one of these sites for tonight’s dinner. It looked good; I just hope I have enough chicken to make it.

Father’s Day – A Bit of History

It’s a day of honoring fatherhood. In Europe (Catholic countries), March 19 is the date of celebration, which is the same day as Saint Joseph’s Day since the Middle Ages. In the United States, Father’s Day created by Sonora Smart Dodd. It is celebrated on the third Sunday of June, starting in 1910. Yep, that’s right this Sunday is Father’s Day, so remember to let your father know how much he means to you. Smile, I hope everyone has a fantastic Father’s Day.

Scribblersquest (A Writer’s Journey) – Weekly Update 6/12

Welcome to my weekly update of what is going on with Karen Carnahan’s life as a writer. Each week I share with my readers so they can have a chance to get to know me, personally and professionally. As I go through the learning process, I share my experiences as an Author/Blogger, plus informative things I’ve found on this journey.

Personal Things

It has been a sad beginning of the week for me. On Sunday, my dad let me know that my Uncle (his bother) died, may he rest in peace. I’ve been in a blah mood all for three days.

I tried hard to focus on my work; however, my granddaughter has had other plans such as tea parties. The good thing is I have figured out how to have a tea party while I type. I can imagine what it will be like when I go to edit. 😊

The internet keeps going down to make matters worse. Amazing the power of the internet can shut you down faster than anything. I move onto the next thing on the list that doesn’t require the internet, like cleaning my house.

Or I go somewhere else to do an essential part of writing, which is observing people noting how people interact with themselves as well as others—logging it into a notebook for future reference with a character. One of the places I like to observe people is on the beach. I have seen people be sweet as pie to one another, while others can be as mean as an alley cat. Kids can lead the world in making friends; they have no fear. Adults should take lessons from them. I have to say I enjoyed the beach. The only problem with the beach is the sun. Once I’ve been in the sun for an hour or so, I’m looking for shade. Grateful, there is a restaurant close by, with a shaded porch.

Coronavirus Update

Well, now that good old Texas has reopened about 50%, the case of Coronavirus is on the rise. Three days straight, Houston has had a rise in case we are at level two, which means wear your protective gear, be careful don’t go anywhere unless necessary. I don’t know if we will get back to level one. I hope not, I know, for a fact, we can’t survive another stay at home. Yes, my hubby got a job; however, he’s making half of what he made before the stay at home order. It will be a while before we climb out of the hole financially. I am pretty sure we are not alone in this situation. It has been hard for many people. As you go out to do your errands, please be safe.

New Book Cover

On a more positive note, I selected the mock-up for the Dragon Squad – Book Two of The Elite Series, which is being done by Andrea Fodor, CReya-tive. She does fantastic work. If you need a book cover, please check her out; her covers sell like hotcakes. They sell within minutes of her posting them.

You’ll have to stick around to find out the reveal date of Book Two’s cover. I am excited; I can’t wait to share it with you all. Oh, anyone who has signed up, to join my adventure, will get received puzzle piece of the book cover reveal a week earlier than all others.

Blog Recommendations

I chose taglines for this week’s blog recommendations, seeing I had to come up with the tagline for the Dragon Squad book cover. I figured I would share what I have found out about taglines:

Thoughtsonfantasy.com What Makes a Good Book Tagline? By Nicola. This post has a list of taglines that worked, even ones that didn’t work. Also, a list to let you know what to include when making your tagline. You want a catchy tagline for people to remember.

Writershelpingwriters.com How to Write a Tagline for Your Book (And Why You Need To) by Angela Ackerman. This post gives you the description/example of a Logline as well as a Tagline. Both are good to know how to use.

Personally, I took the info from both of these blog posts when coming up with the tagline for the second book. I have to say I learned a lot from these posts.

Thank You

Why Should You Use A-List, You Ask?

Good question! Using a list will allow you to make your packing experience so much more pleasant. When you’re trying to remember everything you have to do while preparing for your travels. Especially when you are packing for the entire family. I know once you get out and about after being locked up from the Coronavirus the last thing your worried about is a list, but it could come in handy.

 Timeframe

When planning your vacation, your time limit to prepare will depend on the size of your family as well as your destination. I recommend going over your list at least two weeks in advance. If you have a large family you may want to do this soon.

Why so early, you ask?

This gives you plenty of time to review the list in case you need to pick anything up at the store. Also, if you need to do any updates say call the airport, train/bus station for the amount of luggage you’re allowed, weight limits plus to confirm your transportation is still a go. Plus, if you need any additional paperwork, you might be required to bring.

Primary Items

It’s amazing how we use these items every day, yet when we go to pack for a vacation, we seem to always forget at least one thing.

Don’t sweat we all do this; you are not alone.

Oh, if you have children of any kind, it only gets much harder. They think of only the things they want to take not the necessities. Leaving you with spending more of your budget you hadn’t planned.

Just imagine all the things you have to remember when packing for an infant or toddler. Yes, it can be a nightmare. A check-off list makes this a lot easier to remember all the small items required, i.e., Gas Meds, Orajel, Tylenol, Cold n Cough, thermostat, nail clippers, and binky’s the list can go on. You get my point right. Not to mention if you are a new parent, this can be even more stressful to remember everything.

Extra Items

You may even want to add other items you plan on taking like googles, flotation devices, sunscreen, skies, snowboard, and anything else to entertain you children. Maybe you want to add extra items for yourself like the book you bought a month ago haven’t had the time to read.

I have learned the best way to ensure I have everything is by not checking the item off until I have put it in the luggage. It never fails I could have it set on the bed check it off my list. It never makes its way into my luggage. I get so frustrated with myself when this happens. No, I am not saying you are as bad as I am when it comes to this. Things happen; there are tons of distractions this day in age. Doorbell, cell phone, kids, television, and etc.

I now always make sure it is in the luggage before I place the checkmark next to the item this way I know without a dought I have the item I wanted packed.

 Hotels

Choose a hotel to meet your needs. I like the sites to show pictures of the rooms as well as the amenities.

The bad experience I had gone off the website to book the room with the amenities got to the room wasn’t even like it had been described. Long story short we found another hotel moved the same night.

This is the list I use when I look for a room now:

Safety is the number one factor. Even some of the nicer hotels this day in age can have people doing drugs within them. Not good when you walk down the hall to smell snuck weed. Talk about a smell you’ll never forget. It smells just like the animal spray. The best thing is you don’t have to have a tomato bath to get off the smell; however, you may want a shower after smell it.

You may even want to call the local authorities to check of criminal activity within the area you plan on staying. This will allow you to be prepared if pickpocketing, human trafficking or any other crime is high.

Campsite

If you have a route planned out, you may want to schedule stops in advance to ensure availability. During the summer months, campgrounds tend to fill up quick people who don’t realize how hard it can be to find an empty spot. Not to mention a campsite to include all the amenities you are looking for so your family has a wonderful time.

Vacations are hard enough without being able to find a beautiful place to stay. Believe me when I say the more delightful facilities fill up fast.

My husband and I decided to take the kids camping we decided to go to the state park. Little did we know one it now cost to camp at a state park but two they were full. We had driven hours from our home, we got lucky for the fact my husband had a family member who had some land not far from where we were planning on camping. We ended up camping there instead. It was an experience we all laugh about still today.

Documents

You think this is crazy to put on your list but it’s not. Why well if your driver’s license is in your wallet/purse, you will be sure not to forget them. Other items such as insurance cards, any discount cards like AARP, choice rewards, and etc. can be useful when you travel.

 Adequate Funding

Most people rely on their bank card and/or credit card when they travel, plus they may have a little bit of cash on them.

You want to be safe with your bank and/or credit card. Do they offer a wallet feature where if your card goes missing, you can lock your card till it is found? This is a good idea to find out before you travel. Not all banks have this feature.

You also will want to get with your bank to inform them of your travels. Some banks don’t allow cards to be used out of state for fraud reasons. To keep from having your vacation disrupted due to not being able to your use card till the next day when you can get ahold of the bank. Imagine you are at a restaurant you go to use your card to find out it has been declined. Nothing more embarrassing, especially if you don’t have the cash with you on hand to pay your bill. Add it to your list to do before you leave your home.

Don’t plan to use only your bank card. If it were to get lost/stolen or decided to quit working, you could be left with no funds to enjoy your vacation. It is wise to diversify your funds i.e., traveler’s checks, prepaid cards, and/or credit cards.

Meal Preparations

You will want to review the area in which you plan on traveling. You might have an idea about what type of restaurants you’ll want to visit. Along with getting to know the cost so you don’t end up with an unexpected surprise bill in which wipes out half your spending fund to take away from your fun. When you are busy with everything, this can be overlooked when planning the cost of food in another state or aboard.

Why should you use a list, you ask?

Good question! Using a list will allow you to make your packing experience so much more pleasant. When you’re trying to remember everything you have to do while preparing to travel. Especially when packing for the entire family.

 Timeframe

When planning your vacation, time limits to prepare will depend on your destination. I recommend going over your list at least two weeks in advance.

Activities

Most of the time, when we choose a vacation area for the events going on in the area, we have chosen.
• Shopping venues
• Restaurants
• Amusement parks
• Boardwalk
• Beach
• River
• White water rafting
• Water skiing
• Snow skiing
• Snowboarding, etc.
Whichever you decide to do, you’ll want to check out the prices of the activities to ensure you have enough money allotted for all the activities you wish to participate in.

Emergency fund

You’re going to want to make sure you have an emergency fund. Most people don’t consider this as part of a budget for a vacation. However, It is crucial not to jinks anyone but should your car break down or someone gets hurt/sick, you need to have some extra cash available for these surprises which always seem to happen on vacation.

Final Prep

Don’t forget to put your list in your suitcase, this way you ensure everything you took with you comes home. How? You put a line through your check to make an X this way; you have double-checked your list not to leave anything behind.

You may even want to add the things that you have purchased while on your vacation.

Nothing like getting home your tired you need to charge your cell phone to realize you left it behind plugged in next to the bed at the hotel. This has happened to me. It is annoying.
